HUMN 8402- USING SOCIAL IDENTITY THEORY

OLD-FASHIONED VERSUS MODERN PREJUDICE

As you observed in previous weeks, social identity theory, also known as SIT, is a rich source for understanding intergroup relations. SIT provides a theoretical foundation for understanding how the mere perception of belonging to a group is sufficient to trigger preferential treatment of ingroup members.

For this Assignment, you use insights from SIT to explain the origins of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination of outgroup members from the media in this weeks Learning Resources. You will then use SIT to suggest how the prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination of outgroup members in the media might be reduced.
